Making a memorial ring from old unworn rings

Making a memorial ring from old unworn rings

I recently had the pleasure of making a gold memorial ring with the ash hidden inside the band. This was a project that use the customers own gold, which came in the form of 3 rings that were broken, too small or just unworn.

The design was to incorporate the emeralds out of one ring and garnets as they were the birth stone of the deceased Alison. There was another very personal touch in the design as Alison was a singer, and loved writing and making music. Where the ash is hidden we engraved music notes.

The process of melting the gold does take some time to get it right, we have to add some new gold grain in to make the metal easier to work with. I probably melted and added to the gold 3 times to get the consistency and weight right. Then it was over to the rolling mill to shape the nugget into a usable wire and over to the bench to form it into a ring shape. A small hollow is cut where the ash sits and this is covered with a gold sheet that is soldered into place. Then it was over to our setter Leanda who did an excellent job of setting the birthstones of the customers emeralds and some purchased garnets

This ring will now last a lifetime with its owner, who can have her sister close to her everyday.
